ID-100135156“Some of this Roundup Ready cotton, the size and consistency of a baseball, grows so closely together you can’t knock it over with a combine. This is a real crisis,” says Andrew Kimbrell, public interest attorney and the founder and director of the Center for Food Safety.

The main concern is the weeds that have grown up to be resistant to Round Up leaving few options to kill those weeds. Kimbrell is saying they are stating, “Now we want to have corn and soybean and cotton that is resistant to 2,4-D. So we need 4 or 5 more million pounds of 2,4-D, it’s the only way we can kill these weeds.”

The National Pesticide Information Center says, “2,4-D is an herbicide that kills plants by changing the way certain cells grow. 2,4-D comes in several chemical forms, including salts, esters, and an acid form. The toxicity of 2,4-D depends on its form. The form also affects what will happen to 2,4-D in the environment and what impacts it may have, especially on fish.”

They go on to say, “2,4-D was first used in the United States in the 1940s.” They used it in the Vietnam War and it was known as part of the toxin make-up of Agent Orange.

Kimbrell says, “We know it’s an element of Agent Orange. We know it’s associated with a number of different diseases from Parkinson’s to cancer. But it’s the only way we can kill the various super weeds we caused.”

He points his finger at the cause, “That’s Dow Chemical that’s doing that.”

Kimbrell is known for standing up against pesticide contamination and GMOs.

“Monsanto was one of the principal companies to supply Agent Orange to the U.S. government during the Vietnam War. Agent Orange is a defoliant that was used in Vietnam between 1962 and 1971 to ‘clear vegetation around military bases and obliterate hiding places and rice paddies used by the Viet Cong.‘ It is made from two herbicide compounds, 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T, and releases dioxin as a byproduct of the manufacturing process that becomes contained within 2,4,5-T (and in some instances in 2,4-D). Dioxin is highly carcinogenic and one of the most dangerous chemicals known to man,” Source Watch says.

In 2010 Monsanto spent $6,560,000 for lobbying. That same year they reported sales of over $10.5 billion.

The use of 2,4-D is currently up for approval at the USDA as this article goes to print.

“Monsanto says Roundup won’t work any more. Soon 2,4-D won’t work anymore, we want to stack all that with dicamba, one of the worst herbicides known to mankind,” Kimbrell says. Currently there are over a million signatures saying don’t use 2,4-D or dicamba.

Monsanto advertisements in New York claimed that the main ingredient in Roundup, glyphosate, “Is less toxic to rats than table salt,” and is “Practically non-toxic.”

The solution is switching to organic foods but the battle is not over. The war is still only beginning.

The problem is when you go to a restaurant there’s no telling what “foods” are in your meal. Many people with food intolerances blame their digestive issues on hidden pesticides. Even organic vegetables are sometimes treated with toxic sprays or washed to maintain packing freshness. “Organic needs to be the floor of all agriculture, not the ceiling,” Kimbrell says. Buying local and buying organic is healthier for people and for the future of food. Avoidance of GMOs is vital.

Dr. Michael Hansen, Senior Scientist with Consumers Union, the publisher of Consumer Reports says any studies done on these engineered crops needs to be done with the company’s approval. He adds, “Could you imagine if tobacco research was only done when the tobacco companies had the final say?” To read more click here.

Nourishing Plot is written by Becky Plotner, ND, traditional naturopath, GAPS who sees clients in Rossville, Georgia. Since her son was delivered from the effects of autism (Asperger’s syndrome), ADHD, bipolar disorder/manic depression, hypoglycemia and dyslexia through food she continued her education specializing in Leaky Gut and parasitology through Duke University, finishing with distinction. This is not a news article published by a paper trying to make money. This blog is put out by a mom who sees first hand the effects of nourishing food vs food-ish items. No company pays her for writing these blogs, she considers this a form of missionary work. It is her desire to scream it from the rooftops so that others don’t suffer from the damaging effect of today’s “food”.
