Detecting The Core Problem: Hashimoto’s and Celiac

“There are a lot of theories out there on thyroid that aren’t really accurate. Often I wonder if the people that write this material have actually worked with thyroid patients,” says Datis Kharazzian, DHSc, DC, MNeuroSci. “There is just so much information that doesn’t correlate with what we see in patients.”
Dr. Datis says thyroid sourced illnesses are not a nutrient deficiency but instead a complex web woven into the adrenal gland, iodine stores, magnesium, zinc, copper and other minerals. Other factors that affect the thyroid are toxicity and how the thyroid is able to secret juices that keep the body functioning properly.

He is a firm believer in a full blood panel to monitor status, doing it regularly and treating while seeking to see the numbers get better.
Dr. Datis says all thyroid and Hashimoto’s is autoimmune connected as a glandular defect. He says elevated
antibody levels depict this, hypothroidism is second to Hashimoto’s as the Hashimoto’s attacks other tissues. Often times there are other autoimmunity diseases which can be shown through other antibody blood tests. He also says celiac disease often exists in the same patients.
Cyrex Labs offers tests for the blood brain barrier breach as well as leaky gut and allows him to see what exactly is happening inside the body.
Dr. Datis uses most frequently Cyrex Array 2 for intestinal permeability, Array 3 for celiac sensitivities, Array 4 which shows cross reactions related to wheat, but he holds Array 5 as the most resourceful as it divulges tissue antibodies which give him a picture of what pathogenic reactions are happening within the cells.
Multiple autoimmunity factors exist together because it’s often triggered by dietary ingestion, triggers. Cross reactions like rice, milk, sesame and corn cross reacting with gluten often leave a celiac patient feeling ill. So when a patient has removed wheat from their diet but still eat rice flour, often a primary ingredient in gluten free flours, they suffer. These issues will be flagged in Array 4.
He says a Paleo Diet or a grain free diet is often effective enough for those with Hashimoto’s to feel more functional.

Dr. Datis says another negative factor, especially for those with autoimmunity, is blood sugar spikes. It doesn’t matter if these spikes are caused by insulin resistance or hypoglycemia. He says, “Blood sugar spikes trigger cytokines like Interleukin-6 which then turn on immune cells called Th17 cells and you get an autoimmune inflammatory response.”
News-Medical says Interleukin-6 is supposed, “To stimulate immune response to trauma, especially burns or other tissue damage leading to inflammation.”
EBioscience says, “Th17 cells play a role in host defense against extracellular pathogens.”
Dr. Datis says the vast majority of his patients with Hashimoto’s have blood sugar issues.
Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride, MD, neurosurgeon and neurologist says blood sugar spikes should be controlled by eating copious amounts of pasture raised, antibiotic free animal fats especially for those with the worst gut damage. Those with less gut damage have no trouble getting their animal fats from any meats.
Signs of blood sugar issues are fatigue after meals or before a meal there is a feeling of ravenous hunger often accompanied by anger, irritation or negativity. Some people express the shakes, have a feeling of weakness in the knees or lightheadedness. Other symptoms are hunger within 3 hours of the previous meal, snacking between meals or the need for a lift through food or caffeine stimulants.
