Findings Show Dental Amalgam Fillings Damage Nerves

The University of Calgary Faculty of Medicine did a study on mercury from amalgam fillings and their effects on brain neurons. The mercury study was investigating the deleterious effects of heavy metals and the possible connection with Alzheimer’s Disease.  They reported, “Neurons isolated from brain tissue were grown in culture for several days, after which, very low culture of mercury were added to the culture medium for 20 minutes. Over the next 30 minutes, the nurite membrane underwent rapid degeneration, leaving behind the denuded neurofibrils. In contrast, other heavy metals added to this same concentration, such as aluminum, lead, cadmium and manganese, did not produce this effect.”

Denuded neurofibrils means the growth core of the neurons shrank, leaving behind decapitated and tangled neurofibrils.

Tubulin proteins are supposed to link together in cell growth, in a healthy body. This supports the structure of the nurites. They reported, “When mercury ions are produced into the culture medium, they infiltrate the cells and bind themselves to newly synthesised tubulin molecules. More specifically, the mercury ions attach themselves to the binding site reserved for quanacine triphosphate, or GTB. Since bound GTB normally provides the energy which allows tubulin molecules to attach to one another, mercury ions prevent tubulin proteins from linking together.”

The result is devastating. They say, “Consequently, the nurites microtubules begin to disassemble into free tubulin molecules, leaving the nurites stripped of its supporting structure. Ultimately both the developing nurite and its growth cone collapse, some form tangles.”

Bluntly put, the mercury from amalgam filling was found to destroy the brain neurons, causing them to function improperly.

Before mercury, the process looks much like a comet zooming through space, with an external heat shield. After mercury, it looks like a volatile and spikey bratwurst, falling in on itself, with tentacles that shoot from the center, stretch forward and become tangles.

The dangers of mercury is not new. They say, “Mercury has long been known to be a potent neurotoxic substance, whether it is inhaled or consumed in the diet as a food contaminant. Over the past 15 years, medical research laboratories have established that dental amalgam tooth fillings are a major contributor to body burden.”

They go on to say, “In 1997, a team of research scientists demonstrated that mercury inhalation by animals produced a molecular lesion in brain protein metabolism which was similar to a lesion seen in 80 percent of Alzheimer’s diseased brains.”

Alison Adams, dentist, naturopath and author, says, “For most people, the majority of their exposure comes from deadly amalgam fillings. Amalgam was developed 180 years ago and has never been exposed to any meaningful safety testing.” She goes on to say there are 150 documented symptoms of toxic mercury.

Sarah Russell, Ph.D and NTP from Italy, spoke at the Silicon Valley Health Institute saying, “There is a cumulative effect of mercury, it is also cumulative across generations, passed from mother to child in utero. Mercury usually is a significant piece of most people’s’ health problems, it is a very important part of the story.”

In The Dangers of Dental Amalgams, they say, “If you have something that’s been put in your mouth, that you can’t dispose of in a waste basket without breaking environmental protection laws, there’s no point in keeping it around, there’s no point in taking that type of risk. There’s no point in exposing people to any level of mercury toxicity if you don’t have to.”

Amalgam expert and dentist, David Kennedy says, “It doesn’t make you sick in a day, but, when you do get sick, getting rid of your exposure doesn’t necessarily make you well. Eventually, exposure to mercury accumulates in critical organs, particularly the brain, and then you suffer some neurological disease. It interferes with the way your motor works. You end up with some neurological or motor or thought process that gets fried – that’s what mercury does, it destroys nerves.”

He goes on to say, “What we’ve discovered is anytime you do anything to the filling, weather you chew on it, brush it, or chew gum, or have a hot tottie or whatever, makes it spew mercury vapor at levels that if it was a city, they would evacuate it.” These actions cause the mercury filling to plume vapors, or what is classified as puff. The puffing continues from 30 minutes to 1.5 hours after you eat, drink, brush your teeth or anything else that causes the puff.

When the amalgams are in the mouth, there is no evidence that the puff of amalgam gas doesn’t have the same effect on the neurons, instead the opposite effects happen. For more on the unspoken dangers of amalgam fillings click here.

Your dentist can tell you if you have metal in your fillings. If he’s not conducive, or aware, you can find a holistic or biological dentist online.
