Homemade Makeup – GAPS Approved
Makeup is known to be filled with toxic chemicals and heavy metals which are not beneficial to the body. If you put it on your skin, you might as well lick it. Items are absorbed through the skin, this is proven over and over with medical patches become more popular – because absorption through the skin is effective. Makeup can be made from simple food ingredients, quickly and easily. The base recipe is arrowroot powder and cocoa powder. Arrowroot powder is not GAPS approved as a food because it feeds pathogens in the gut. On the skin, it does not cause the same response. If you have an issue with it, by all means, don’t use it. From the base of arrowroot powder and cocoa, the spices which are added depend on your skin color and where you are applying the color. Foundation powders can have nutmeg, cinnamon or mace added.

Eye shadow colors can add turmeric, mustard powder or even the same tones used for the foundation. Liquid colors can be added adding blues with red cabbage juice or blueberry juice, however, they are not stable and need to be made daily. Powders are stable and can sit in your medicine cabinet in a jar.
Going to the spice section of the store opens up a whole new world of clean makeup opportunities. Making your own makeup is pennies on the dollar when comparing it with store bought foundation, eyeshadow and blush powders.
Reds can be added for blush by using paprika or chili flakes, however, hot spices like this may irritate the skin and should be used with caution.
If a darker color is desired, putting coconut oil on the skin, and then putting powder on top of it, amplifies the color.
If this choice isn’t fitting for you, for whatever reason, The Environmental Working Group has put together a list of the best ranked makeup and beauty products with the least toxicity. For the lists, click here.

I hadn’t thought of this. Thanks for the idea. I have given up wearing make up due to my sensitivities. I’m going to think about this.
