Homemade Tallow and Beeswax Candles

There’s nothing worse than walking into someone’s home or passing the grocery store aisle with scented candles, and getting a headache for the rest of the day – yet making homemade tallow and beeswax candles takes literally seconds and gives a much better product. Traditionally candles were made from just tallow. Today we often find candles in high end stores made from just beeswax, with an accompanying hefty price tag. Using both tallow and beeswax together offers the best of both worlds, at a fraction of the price and offers a homemade touch that warms the heart.

Synthetic fragrances are highly offensive to many people, especially those who suffer from MCS, multiple chemical sensitivities. Using homemade candles is a simple solution.

Homemade candles are so easy, it’s silly.

The easiest way to make candles is to capture tallow right after rendering it from your local farmer. If this is an impossibility, tallow can be purchased from many reputable sources such as this one, or this one.

To make homemade candles, put equal parts tallow and beeswax beads into a pot. There is no perfect measure, eyeballing the mixture is perfect. If the tallow comes right from the rendering pan, it takes about 40 seconds for the beeswax to melt. Add your desired essential oil and pour the mixture into prepared jars.

To prepare jars, put wicks into the bottom of each vessel, standing straight up the middle of the vessel. Wrap the wick around a pencil and lay it across the top of the jar. The wick should be right in the center of the jar.

Cut the wicks at about a quarter of an inch above the top of the mixture and label the jars. They take a long time to burn and more importantly, fill the house with love!

Anything that comes in contact with beeswax can end up a sticky mess. It’s best to immediately wipe out the pot with a paper towel, then wash with hot soap and water. Some people choose to use one pot dedicated to beeswax products due to the mess. Attending to the clean up after you are done will be the best help.
